On the Passing of Alan Rickman and the Adaptation of Books to Film

We have lost another great figure. David at Letters from the Edge of Elfland has written a nice tribute. I thought this would be a good moment to say goodbye to Professor Snape, and to highlight David’s interesting work thinking about rooted literature.

About Brenton Dickieson

“A Pilgrim in Narnia” is a blog project in reading and talking about the work of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, the Inklings, L.M. Montgomery, and the worlds they created. As a "Faith, Fantasy, and Fiction" blog, we cover topics like children’s literature, myths and mythology, fantasy, science fiction, speculative fiction, poetry, theology, cultural criticism, art and writing. This blog includes my thoughts as I read through my favourite writings and reflect on my own life and culture. In this sense, I am a Pilgrim in Narnia--or Middle Earth, or Fairyland, or Avonlea. I am often peeking inside of wardrobes, looking for magic bricks in urban alleys, or rooting through yard sale boxes for old rings. If something here captures your imagination, leave a comment, “like” a post, share with your friends, or sign up to receive Narnian Pilgrim posts in your email box. Brenton Dickieson (PhD, Chester) is a father, husband, friend, university lecturer, and freelance writer from Prince Edward Island, Canada. A sad loss to us all.

And thanks for this introduction to David Russell Mosley’s blog!

  4. Greetings, Brenton,

Its an irony that Alan Richman, who played the Sheriff of Nottingham in “Prince of Thieves”, died so close to Brian Bedford, who voiced Robin Hood in the Disney cartoon (my personal long time favorite!). May they both rest in peace.

In other news, here is the republished version of your article on a Christmas message from Narnia on “The Fellowship of The King”:

Thank you so much for being our guest! We are actually in the midst of setting up for a fantasy/sci-fi themed issue if anyone might like to join in by submitting pieces. We are particularly in need of good short stories and poems.

I would also really appreciate if anyone interested might sign up as followers to “The Fellowship of The King” website, and spread the word about us! 🙂

    Blessings,
    Rosaria Marie

    • I didn’t get that neat little Robin Hood tidbit. Lots of Hollywood dying this week, so it was hard to keep up!
I did see the repub, and was pleased (I hope I tweeted it out).
Do you have a “Call for Stories” that I could send out?

      • Yeah, there’s like a Hollywood death rate epidemic or something!! I was just waiting around for the Trekkie memorials over Leonard Nimoy beamed out of our sphere last February…then the plot thickened!!

Anyway, yes, I would be most appreciate if you could post out a little “call to arms” as follows:

“The Fellowship of The King” (www.thefellowshipoftheking.net) is a Christian-based online magazine inspired by and dedicated to the cultivation of literary expressions in the spirit of such authors as J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, George MacDonald, G.K. Chesterton, etc. Dabbling in fantasy, history, philosophy, theology, and a host of other topics, the magazine seeks to draw together literary and artistic talent from various backgrounds with a common appreciation for the Liberal Arts and Classical Culture.

At present, TFOTK will be launching the third installment of their fantasy/sci-fi trilogy issue. For those who would like to participate, your submissions of short fiction, poetry, and essays will be welcome, both for the issuu format and rotation on the magazine website. Contact the Editor, Rosaria Marie: campionsbrag@aol.com
Also, please spread the word about the magazine to your contacts and sign up as email followers of the website. In the ethereal spirit of Robin Hood: the more the merrier! 😉
