TheOneRing.net tweeted out this quiz by the LOTR Project: Which Character in the Hobbit Are You? I think as we head to the release of The Desolation of Smaug, the second instillation of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, we could use a little humour, what with an epic battle ahead and elves falling in love.
If you try it yourself, you will get a warning that it is just for fun–anyone who expected anything more shouldn’t be doing online quizzes, in my opinion. I especially like the facial hair question. You can take the quiz here: http://lotrproject.com/quiz/.
My result?
Congratulations! You are…
Thorin Oakenshield
You are a strong and natural leader but unfortunately also very stubborn, proud and greedy. If you lose something precious you will go out of your way to get it back.
I didn’t think I was that stubborn. Oh well. But he is a fairly handsome chap, for a dwarf. And he also has a great singing voice!
What was your result? I would love to hear–post it in the comments below.

About Brenton Dickieson
“A Pilgrim in Narnia” is a blog project in reading and talking about the work of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and the worlds they touched. As a "Faith, Fantasy, and Fiction" blog, we cover topics like children’s literature, apologetics and philosophy, myths and mythology, fantasy, theology, cultural critique, art and writing.
This blog includes my thoughts as I read through Lewis and Tolkien and reflect on my own life and culture. In this sense, I am a Pilgrim in Narnia--or Middle Earth, or Fairyland. I am often peeking inside of wardrobes, looking for magic bricks in urban alleys, or rooting through yard sale boxes for old rings. If something here captures your imagination, leave a comment, “like” a post, share with your friends, or sign up to receive Narnian Pilgrim posts in your email box.
Brenton Dickieson is a father, husband, friend, university lecturer, and freelance writer from Prince Edward Island, Canada. You can follow him on Twitter, @BrentonDana.
“Congratulations! You are… Balin
You are obstinate and proud but also wise and not afraid of questioning your leader. With your sharp eyesight you are often selected to keep a lookout.”
Yay, Balin!
Even if you don’t quite like being Thorin from a personality standpoint, you also get to be Richard Armitage, and that’s pretty nice. Plus, very cool sword. 😉

Also, for me, the “sharp eyesight” aspect of Balin doesn’t fit so well. I’m nearsighted and forever bespectacled. But still, I’m happy about coming out as my favorite dwarf from the book.

I’m okay being Thorin. He ended well!
I like Balin, though I’m not sure the movie captured him as well.

He did indeed, and that made me very happy. 🙂
Not yet, and I don’t have much expectation that they will, but one never knows.

You are right. The strong, leader Thorin of the movies must have some breakdown over the next film!

I got Bilbo Baggins. Comfortable life, good food, warm bed. Quite so. Somewhere deep inside a desire for adventure. Yes, but I manage to keep it happy by reading about other people’s adventures.

So will the Took side beat out the Baggins side?

Well, I am about fifty, which was around the same time adventure overtook Bilbo…

So you are a young hobbit then.

I got Gandalf, I’m pleasantly surprised! I thought I was more of a Hobbit than Wizard 🙂

Dwarf doesn’t surprise me given the beard, but I fancy myself most hobbitish…. Well, now that I think about it: wandering, odd proverbs, wistful glances, study–I am a wizard!

Or “wizzard” if anyone gets the reference.

I actually took this yesterday and was very surprised to get Thranduil.
“Spending time in the forest is something you appreciate. People regard you as a leader and you are generous towards people you trust. However, you have a weakness for treasure, especially jewels, and have a terrible time letting go of grudges.”
Can’t say I see myself as a leader nor particularly caring for jewels, but still neat that I get to be an elf.

That I do 🙂 I could probably spend all my time there given the chance.

“CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE…
ELROND
You are a strong leader known for your incorruptibility and wisdom. Your appearance is ageless despite your experiences and hardships. Your home is always open to friends in need.”
I like being an elf but why am I a bloke??

Nice. Are you ageless in wisdom and looks?

“I’m not that stubborn,” thought Brenton Oakenshield, stubbornly.

Hmm… I too got Bilbo, like revgeorge above, who also happens to be a Lutheran pastor. I wonder what that suggests about Lutheran clergy..?
LikeLike
Well, since there are numerous Lutheran clergy & just one me, it probably suggests more about me than about Lutheran pastors in general. 🙂

Well, this ruins the integrity of the whole thing!
Still, I’ll not find reason to cause you to be tempted at a grudge.
